How Energy Impacts Your Health and Emotions

We hear the wordenergyall the time. Whether it’s about feeling drained after a long day, catching “good vibes” from someone, or talking about the power of food as fuel, energy is part of our everyday language. Yet, when the term comes up in holistic health, some people roll their eyes and dismiss it as “woo woo.”

But here’s the truth: energy is both scientific and practical. It is the very fabric of life, surrounding and moving through us every second. Everything is energy and when we understand this, we can start to notice how it shapes our experiences, our health, and even our interactions with others.

The Science of Energy

At its core, energy is not mystical. Physics tells us that every space, no matter how empty it looks, is buzzing with activity. Air is filled with gases, particles, and microbes. On a molecular level, atoms and ions are constantly vibrating. Even still water in a pond, when viewed under a microscope, is alive with movement.

Our bodies are no different. Every cell, muscle, and system is in motion. The heart and brain communicate through electrical impulses that can be measured with medical equipment. Static electricity, too, is a reminder that we are electrical beings who carry and exchange energy with our environment.

Another fascinating fact: energy cannot be created or destroyed. It only transforms. Think of a runner at the starting line; she doesn’t “make” new energy, she gathers it from her body’s stores and channels it into movement. The same is true when we muster strength to get out of bed despite exhaustion. That energy was already present; we simply accessed it.

Physical and Subtle Energy

Energy can be thought of in two categories: physical energy and subtle energy.

  • Physical energy is measurable and tangible. It has mass, can be weighed, and follows the rules of time and space.

  • Subtle energy, on the other hand, operates beyond the visible. It can move faster than light and does not rely on physical mass. This is the realm of intuition, connection, and remote healing.

A simple way to visualise subtle energy is through radio or light waves. We cannot see them, yet they transmit information across vast distances instantly. Similarly, subtle energy allows us to connect with others, sense the “mood” of a room, or even feel when a loved one is unwell sometimes without a single word exchanged.

Living in an Energetic World

Because everything is energy, we are constantly interacting with the environment around us. Have you ever stepped into a room and instantly felt the atmosphere shift? Light and airy spaces lift us up, while heavy or tense environments can drain us within minutes.

This is where concepts like aura and chakras come in. Our bodies radiate energy beyond our skin, forming a field that interacts with others. This explains why we sometimes feel uplifted after meeting someone grounded and positive, or why certain encounters leave us exhausted. It’s not just “in our head” it’s an energetic exchange.

Ancient practices like Chinese medicine and Ayurveda have worked with this understanding for thousands of years. Acupuncture, acupressure, and Reiki are all methods of moving or balancing energy through the body’s natural channels. While modern science is still catching up, studies on twins, intuition, and even polygraph tests continue to highlight the undeniable connection between energy and human experience.

Protecting and Managing Your Energy

If energy is everywhere and constantly exchanged, how do we maintain balance?

  1. Grounding: Walking barefoot on the earth allows a natural exchange of ions, helping regulate the nervous system and restore calm. Many people notice lower stress, steadier breathing, and even improved heart rhythms after grounding.

  2. Setting Boundaries: Just as you lock your door at night, you can create energetic protection. This can be as simple as visualising a bubble around yourself, carrying a crystal, or stating an intention such as, “I choose to protect my energy today.”

  3. Awareness Practices: Pay attention to how you feel in different spaces or around different people. If your mood shifts suddenly be it joy, anxiety, or fatigue it may be an energetic exchange rather than something “wrong” with you.

  4. Expansion and Contraction: With practice, you can learn to expand your aura outward to connect deeply with others, or contract it inward like a comforting blanket when you need protection.

These tools make it easier to navigate the “energetic bumper cars” of daily life, especially in crowded environments like shops, offices, or public transport.

The Healing Power of Energy

Holistic practices that work with energy such as Reiki, crystal therapy, and intuitive coaching are not about magic tricks. They are about tuning into the subtle currents that already exist. Crystals, for example, emit frequencies that can support the body in unblocking energy or breaking negative patterns. Reiki can be sent remotely, across any distance, because it works on the subtle energy plane where time and space do not limit connection.

Interestingly, many people discover that they already sense energy without formal training. A mother’s intuition about her child, a gut feeling in a risky situation, or the comfort of being near a loved one are all examples of energy awareness in action. These abilities are not limited to a chosen few; they are part of being human. With practice and trust, anyone can strengthen them.

The Balance

Energy is not just a spiritual concept it is the foundation of life itself. From the movement of atoms to the way we sense emotions, energy shapes every experience we have. By understanding and working with it, we gain tools to improve health, protect ourselves, and connect more deeply with the world around us.

So next time you feel that “gut instinct” or notice the shift in a room, pause and remember it’s not imagination. It’s energy. And everything is energy.
